Mokara Orchids Care

Mokara orchids are inter-generic hybrids of Arachnis X ascocentrum X vanda which have the highest number of colors compared to other orchids. Mokara is probably the only flower with a wide range of colors such as purple, pink, blue, red, orange, yellow, coral and each color has its own range that will definitely be able to express thousands of expressions.

For example, the color purple can be associated with spirituality and nobility. A deep purple communicates prosperity, while a light purple or lavender purple of mokara reflects delicacy and sweet romance. In some countries like Thailand and China, the color purple is an expression of grief and sadness. In many cultures, purple is the symbolic color of the sovereign.

Mokara, commonly known as the smile orchid, is native to Asia where it was first discovered and cultivated. Currently, this tropical orchid can be found on almost all continents, with the exception of extremely cold regions such as Antarctica. The Sanskrit name Mokara comes from Hindu philosophy which states that every person has three health states which are the causal body, subtle body and physical body, where Mokara represents the physical body or form.

Mokara has a long stem that produces 10 flowers per stem. Mocaras are popular in wedding bouquets because of their delicacy and bright colors, along with the striking appearance of a starfish. You can cut off long flowering stems and place them in a bowl of water. To extend their ornamental life you can cut back the underwater stem by ¼ inch every 3 days and replace the water in the vase with warm water until it fills near the brim of the vase.

Mokara orchids are included in the bright light orchid group. Keeping it in a place with morning sunlight until noon will be most adequate in terms of light. If in doubt whether you are giving your mokara enough light, you can look at the color of the leaves.

Generally healthy orchid leaves are bright green instead of dark green which indicates a lack of light. When you see the leaves turning reddish green, this is a clear indication to give your orchid too much light. Although mokara can tolerate full sunlight but avoid exposure to this direct sunlight as their leaf surface is flat which tends to absorb excess heat which can burn the leaves.

It has been proven that mokara, especially modern hybrids, can stand low light and show good health and successful flowering. But this can happen if you change the light intensity from bright to low gradually, which means you have to give your orchid time to acclimate until it’s certain to die. If you want to care for this orchid in low light intensity, you should reduce the frequency of watering and fertilizing.

The most suitable temperature for mokara is between 50º – 100ºF or 10º – 38ºC. When it comes to feeding, mokars are somewhat greedy in the sense that they are strong feeders, especially when they are fully grown. They need to be fertilized in the spring to fall once a week and given some fresh water in between. Fertilizing them once a month will be sufficient throughout the winter and autumn.

Well, if you are looking for an orchid that comes in many colors and sizes, is easy to care for, and is available all year round, then the Mokara orchid is what you are looking for.
