Use a Vortex Koi Filter With Japanese Matting For Superior Pond Filtration
Why are vortex pond filters and Japanese matting so successful?
Biological pond filters, regardless of size or design, are responsible for converting toxic ammonia to nitrates. Ammonia decomposition requires a lot of oxygen, Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter bacteria require filter media with a high specific surface area for nitrifying and survival but with minimal turbulence. Turbulent conditions promote maximum contact between ammonia, oxygen, and nitrifying bacteria, which accelerates the rate at which ammonia is oxidized.
Vortex pond filters are designed this way and are one of the best koi pond filtration systems available when combined with Japanese matting. The Japanese are the home of koi breeding and leading experts when it comes to these precious ornamental fish. In Japan, vortex filtration is widely used due to its proven effectiveness, low maintenance and reliability.
How does a vortex filter work?
A vortex filter must be installed as a primary filtration system before the pond water flows into the biological chamber, housing the nitrifying bacteria. Pond water containing particles such as leaves, fish droppings and decaying organic matter is pumped from the bottom of the pond into the vortex chamber, the swirling motion of the water causes the debris to fall to the bottom of the chamber. Settled material is easily removed at a later stage by opening the purge valve. The main advantage of this filtration system is its ability to remove the majority of waste before it has a chance to mix with the beneficial nitrifying bacteria living on the Japanese matting. It is beneficial in the following ways:
* Any unwanted heterotrophic bacteria, which cause water quality problems and fish health problems are removed from the water before it has a chance to contaminate the pond.
* Particles do not have a chance to come into contact with the Japanese matting and therefore cannot block the openings in the matting, resulting in a very large surface area.
I have discussed the benefits of vortex filtration so far in this article. However, the average pond keeper with small to medium sized fish ponds up to 1000 gallons (US) has some disadvantages:
* They are designed for use by koi professionals in large ponds and will be overkill for most small fish ponds. For pond keepers with small ponds I would recommend pressurized pond filters from industry recognized manufacturers such as Fishmate, OS or Hoselock as their pond maintenance products come with excellent warranties and are designed to keep running costs to a minimum.
* They can be expensive to purchase and difficult to install. When installing a vortex filter it is important to choose the right model for the pump flow rate size you need. If you choose a model that is too small for the required pump flow rate, water containing particulate matter will go directly to the next filtration stage. Larger models have longer retention times and thus provide a better chance for the solid waste to settle in the primary vortex chamber, where it can be easily removed.
That being said, if you are compromising your fish’s health by using an inferior biofilter, you may wish you had used a professional biofiltration system in the first place. Koi can be very expensive to replace, and they are just as susceptible to stress as their hardy goldfish cousins.
If you’re looking for the best Koi pond filtration system available, a vortex Koi filter and Japanese matting are the options that many professional Koi keepers choose. The design not only removes up to 80% of solids from pool water but also removes large amounts of ammonia quickly and easily.
