Why are vortex pond filters and Japanese matting so successful?

Biological pond filters, regardless of size or design, are responsible for converting toxic ammonia to nitrates. Ammonia decomposition requires a lot of oxygen, Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter bacteria require filter media with a high specific surface area for nitrifying and survival but with minimal turbulence.
