Lacerta agilis ChersonensisBulgarian and Romanian lowlands, eastern Poland and western Russia.
Lacerta agilis iriensisUpper reaches of the Iori River in the Caucasus.
Snout-Ventral length (SVL) approximately 8 cm´s and tail 1,5 times of SVL.
Colors and patterns vary between subspecies and populations. Gray ground-color predominantly brown, with numerous dark brown or black spots, especially a dark dorsalstripe. The sexual dimorphism of the species is particularly evident during the breeding season, when males become conspicuously green on the flanks. Males have broad heads, are built and are on average slightly larger than females. Juveniles are similar in color to adults but lack the green pigment. The total length of the hatchling is about 2 cm SVL, about 5.5 cm to 6.5 cm.
Maximum lifespan is 12 years.
The species prefers heathlands with sandy or sandy soils, also inhabiting sand dunes in some areas. This species prefers southern slopes, especially at northern elevations. These parts are also needed for spawning and hatching during the breeding season.
A pair should be placed in a terrarium of at least 50 cm X 30 cm X 30 cm size with sand as substrate, one part moist and one part dry at a depth of 10 – 15 cm. The moist sand of this depth ensures that the females dig burrows while laying eggs, while also increasing the relative humidity in the vines. Note that males are territorial, so only one male/affiliate.
Bark, pieces of clay, low branches and leaves are also added to provide cover and climbing possibilities.
Provide a water bowl, but spray the water every morning or evening to make sure the animals are drinking.
A spotlight on a piece of wood makes a good basking spot, as the species requires UV-B light. Temperatures range from 25°C to 27°C during the day and reach 35°C at baskingspots. Night temperature drops to 14°C to 18°C. During summer the daytime photoperiod is constant at 12-14 hours/day.
2 males and 2 females of this species can be found in one enclosure of 3 X 4 meters size.
It should be well planted surrounded by a variety of plants to mimic natural habitats. Logs / heavy roots and flat stones / rocks or slabs should be provided for basking spots and cover. It is good to use flowering plants to attract insects for a variety of natural food. Feed some crickets from time to time to ensure that the animals are getting enough food. Use a watering can to give the fence and animals a light shower of drinking water once a day.
This species requires a hibernating period to initiate mating behavior in the spring. This is done by placing animals in aerated boxes with a deep moist sphagnum-moss layer/bedding. This box is kept in the refrigerator for about 4-5 months, from November to April at about 4°C.
Mating takes place between March and May and eggs are laid from late May to July.
The northern population lays a single egg and the southern population lays 2 eggs per year. 4 to 18 eggs/clutch, witch takes about 12 weeks to hatch.
Lizards accept all kinds of insects, earthworms and sometimes sweet fruits and flowers. All food not from the outside should be washed down with vitamins and calcium supplements.
