Tourist Activities And Tips For The Nile River

The name Nile is derived from the Greek word nilos meaning valley, the Nile River is the longest river in the world known to originate in Jinja Uganda. It is a large river in Northeast Africa that begins its journey through waterlogged regions near the equator and then flows northward through the arid Sahara desert before emptying into the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The river is 6695 km (4184 mi) long. The river flows through a total of nine countries, although it is associated with Uganda and Egypt. Other countries include Ethiopia, Zaire, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and Sudan.

This longest river mainly has two main branches which are the White and Blue Nile which then join at Khartoum to form the main Nile which includes the Egyptian Nile and the Cataract Nile. The longest stretch of the White Nile further divides into three parts 1) Central Sudan region; 2) revenge; and 3) the lake plateau region.

The Nile River has played a major role in the civilizational life and history of some of these countries, particularly Egypt and Uganda. The Nile is a source of energy for Uganda, as the country’s major power plant is built on the Nile. It has also provided water for human life and its banks are so fertile that even though Egypt is a dry land, it has allowed the Egyptians to irrigate and live their lives on the fertile soil along the banks. Animals such as crocodiles that live on the banks of the river are also watered by the Nile River in Egypt. Nile crocodiles in Egypt are about 4 meters long, but some are much longer.

As a river, the Nile has a lot to offer tourists from boat trips to its source, to activities such as rafting, kayaking, fishing on the Victoria Nile and bungee jumping in Uganda. This is a whole new story for Egypt as there are many things to see along the banks of the Nile, including historical sites. Those interested in getting an up close and personal experience of the Nile can travel along the famous river on riverboat cruises departing from the many cities along the river. On any of your trips to Africa, the Nile River- a natural wonder is one of the historical places you should not miss.
