How To Use Vellum For Your Card Making Ideas

One of my favorite types of craft paper to use for my card making ideas is vellum paper, you can do so much with it to create amazing effects and designs.

Vellum was originally a translucent type of paper made from calfskin that was soaked and then dried at room temperature under some form of tension.

Vellum is a parchment paper that gets its name from the French word velin meaning calf skin, it is smooth and durable and can be used in many ways for card making ideas.

Vellum paper can come in a variety of colors or prints and vary in weight and thickness.

Using vellum for your card making ideas is a fun way to embellish and add definition to your cards, it doesn’t always have to be a plain color as vellum can come in many prints, including flowers, swirls and even pictures.

You can use vellum to mat and layer and even cover the entire front of the card but even though it looks a little off you need to be careful when adding it to your card because a lot of the adhesive will show through.

There are some vellum adhesives available however they can sometimes be expensive and I think you can see the tape even though it’s supposed to be invisible, maybe I just know because it’s there and I’m looking for it.

If possible try to attach the vellum to your card making ideas in ways other than gluing, I use brads where possible so the vellum is secure and doesn’t require glue.

You can print on vellum which is a really effective way to put a message on your card or poem. Because vellum is very smooth you have to be very careful when printing on vellum as it can stain. I would wait at least a few hours before attaching the printed vellum to one of your card making ideas.

You can also try drying the ink using a heat gun but use the lowest setting and be very careful as this can burn the well.

Vellum can also be used to ghost out shapes, I find that punching flower shapes and creating them on the card front gives a wonderful look.

If using vellum quotes you can just cut out the words but I find that it looks great if you tear off the vellum words.

Whether you’re using quotes, printed patterns, or plain vellum, you’ll find that you can do pretty much anything you like with it.
