Phobia Secrets of the All-Caps Typo

One of my teachers in high school was great with chalk or whiteboard markers.

She wrote quickly and legibly – and her handwriting was also beautiful.

She knew how to draw simple pictures and figures in a simple and effective manner. It’s harder than it looks, you know.

But the vast discipline of whiteboard work was a subset that she struggled with:

Writing in all capital letters.

Whenever she did, she made typos.

As for us, we will show her her mistakes. I will never forget what she said:

“When I look at a word, I see its shape, so I can spot a mistake because the shape is wrong. With all capitals, the shape is less familiar and distinctive.”

What an interesting insight.

If you ask most people how to read it, they will be confused by the question. “What do you mean, how? I see the words.”

Some would say something like they extract meaning from symbols, divided into semantic groups that are then scanned for meaning…

Those explanations, while true, are incomplete. In the spirit of my former teacher, let me draw a simple diagram:

Look at the symbols on the page -> make sense

But that’s not how you read it, is it?

This is a step missing.

How do you make sense?

Looking for word shapes like my guru? This leaves you vulnerable to certain typos, such as words in all capitals or substituting Ls for Is.

Do you sound out every phoneme?

Maybe you have synesthesia, so every word has its own “color” or “texture.”

For me, I depend a bit on the shape of the word, but also its sound and its relationship to other words. I’m prone to making weird typos – writing ‘for’ instead of ‘more’ or ‘you’ instead of ‘how’.

If you’re not sure how you process words, it’s not a big deal. It’s not a useful thing to learn for most of us. And it happens so quickly, so automatically, that it’s harder to say than it seems.

Anyway, this means the previous diagram looks like this:

Look at the symbols on the page -> Process automatically -> Make sense

It’s so smooth that you feel like the symbols themselves have meaning instead of you adding them yourself.

Still with me?

The same happens with phobias.

Let’s say you have anthophobia – the fear of flowers. The process looks like this:

See flowers -> feel fear

But that’s not the full picture. The proof is simple – most people see flowers without fear.

So something else must be happening.

And there’s something else:

See flowers -> automatically attach meaning to what you see -> feel fear

Something happens between flowers and fear.

Something fast and automatic.

But not irreversible.

It may seem strangely abstract, little more than an intellectual exercise. It’s not – it’s one of the most powerful and subtle lessons in hypnosis I’ve ever learned.

Because you can use hypnosis, as well as this insight, to resolve any emotional response that troubles you – including phobias.

Of course, if you know about NLP Fast Phobia Cure, you can use it.

But it works for anything—from bad habits to pre-game jitters to binge-watching.

Because with hypnosis, you can rewire your automatic responses and make them healthier.
