3 Easy Ideas For Christmas Cookie Decorating With Kids

One of the happiest moments with my nephews is decorating cookies as Christmas presents in my kitchen. They had more fun than I did and the gift recipients enjoyed their homemade treats. Let me show you how to decorate Christmas cookies with your own kids.

The simpler the process for children, the better. You need three things to get started: a simple sugar cookie recipe, simple royal icing decorations, and various colored tubes of pre-made royal icing so that each child can share the royal icing.

Here’s my favorite chocolate sugar cookie recipe to get you started.

Chocolate Sugar Cookies

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 cup of sugar

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa, sifted (recipe tested with regular cocoa)

  • 1 large egg

  • 1-1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1 tbsp. Chocolate syrup

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the butter and sugar on medium speed for two minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.

  3. Add eggs, vanilla and chocolate syrup. Mix well.

  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa and salt.

  5. Add to the butter mixture a little at a time until fully incorporated. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.

  6. Refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes before using.

The recipe makes 2 dozen cookies, depending on which size cookie cutter is used.

Pre-Made Royal Icing Decorations:Many companies have pre-made royal icing decorations that you can peel off the paper and apply to baked sugar cookies. During the holidays, companies offer packages featuring Santa and his reindeer, snowmen, candy canes, snowflakes and other designs. I would suggest that you peel all of the royal icing decorations off the paper, gently remove any excess paper with a sharp knife, and then place all of the royal icing decorations into a small bowl.

3 Easy Ideas for Decorating Christmas Cookies with Kids

1. Separate decorations:Place a plastic sheet on your floor under the table. Set the children’s decorating table with a plastic tablecloth and place the baked sugar cookies on a tray in the center. Set the premade royal icing decorations in a bowl near the cookie tray. Cut a medium-sized hole in some of the colored royal icing tubes so the kids can squeeze the royal icing onto their sugar cookies, put the tops back on and place them on the other side of the cookie tray. Place a plastic placemat in front of each child, and then place a plastic plate, tray, or sheet of wax paper on a table near them so that they can place their prepared sugar cookies. Also have plastic knives everywhere so kids can spread the royal icing on top of their cookies, and paper towels to cut into medium-sized squares so they can clean their hands while they decorate. You can also keep different types of sprinkle bottles to use. Kids love sprinkles.

2. Supervised decoration: This idea can be a duplicate of the first idea, except you are there to supervise the kids and help with their decorations. If you know how to use fondant, you can use fondant to cover sugar cookies and then help them draw fondant flowers and other fondant shapes to decorate their cookies.

3. Group Decoration:This idea replicates the first idea, but on a larger scale where a group of children are involved in decorating. Different types of sugar cookies can be baked and then divided among the children to decorate and take home different types of sugar cookies with them. Adults can buy decorations and put them in disposable containers and place them on the decoration table for all the children to use. Several adults should be on hand to replenish supplies and provide boxes for children to take their cookies home.

Each of these ideas can be successfully implemented as long as you remember that kids enjoy decorating cookies and creating their own edible masterpiece. And, when you’re done, please be sure to take pictures of the kids with their cookies. This may vary from year to year.
