Organic in the Garden – Low Allergy Annuals

Annuals are grown mainly for their flowers as garden color or cut flowers. Flower pollen is a major allergen so if you suffer from allergies such as hay fever, it is wise to consider finding low or no allergenic flower plants for your garden.

I have suffered from hay fever since childhood. I was introduced to allergies as a country boy while mowing hay on my uncle’s property. Over the years I have come to know the types of plants that can trigger allergies as well as those that have no effect. I’ve also noticed some heavy pollinated flowers that for one reason or another don’t affect my hay fever while others that I expect to be less allergenic have made the condition worse.

Despite my hay fever I pursued a career in the horticulture industry working around both high and low allergen flowers.

Some flowers that I have found to be less allergenic include:

Opium poppy (Papavar somniferum)

Poppies like soil that is highly fertile and will not drain with full sun. Organic mulch can be added to the soil along with compost, vermicompost and animal manure to increase soil fertility. Poppies traditionally bloom in summer but will bloom in autumn. Foliage is blue-green with flowers in shades of red, pinkish purple and white. Single or double flowered varieties can be solid or variegated. Poppies often grow to a height of more than 1 meter.

Lobelia (Lobelia erinus)

Lobelia does not need much water but should not be allowed to dry out. Summer growing annual with flowers in shades of blue, white, pink and mauve. Blue is the most common color in most gardens. These less allergenic plants are good bedding options and grow in pots as well as commonly in borders. Lobelia is low growing and reaches about 20 cm in height.

Begonia (Begonia semperflorens)

Begonias are perennials but are usually considered annuals. Besides African violets, these begonias are my favorite plants. Begonias prefer organic fertile soil in full sun or partial shade. Begonias do well as border plants, in beds or in pots. Begonias are well suited to growing indoors, their low allergen group making them ideal for this environment. The favorite season for begonias is summer.

Impatiens (Impatiens – annual species)

Excitement is worth mentioning. These hardy annuals grow up to 1.5 meters in height. The season of interest in summer likes the aspect of part shade.
