Construction’s Demand for Portable Flow Meter Solutions

The construction industry remains at the heart of many country’s economies. In the United Kingdom, for example, the construction sector employs millions either directly or indirectly. Furthermore, it is playing a pivotal role in the apprenticeship schemes and leading the way in driving up apprentice wages.

For the construction industry to continue this growth, however, efficiency must be maximised and flexibility must be available to the thousands of companies who operate in it. Many argue that it was the lack of efficiency and flexibility which stifled the industry in February 2017, when output dropped by as much as 7.3% according to the Office of National Statistics.

One piece of technology that many construction firms consider vital to maximising efficiency and assuring no errors in their work are flow meters, small pieces of hardware used to monitor the flow of water and gas through piping systems. These flow meters are used to ensure no leakages in the piping installed and that the piping system installed offers maximum efficiency for moving water or gasses around a building.

If we go back to mid-90’s, flow meter technology was very limited. Firstly, the flow meters which were common placed would feature non-ultrasonic technology. Furthermore, they would often be fixed solutions and could, therefore, not be installed without significantly disrupting the flow in a piping network. The use of fixed meters also slowed down the construction process in which workers would have to either painstakingly remove and fit them or accept the cost of using multiple pieces of hardware throughout the construction site.

Two decades on, however, the technology has developed greatly. This is, in part, due to the software and hardware development carried out by manufacturers. These manufacturers include Micronics, a UK based supplier of both fixed and portable flow meters which utilise ultrasonic technology for improved accuracy.

One of Micronics flagship products is the PF440IP, a brilliant example of portable hardware and software. The PF440IP, much like others on the market, can measure the flow on large sized pipes with a diameter of up to 2,000mm. What’s more, it does this whilst offering incredible accuracy and being able work in temperatures between -20°C and 135°C.

This same portable flow meters offers data logging functionality with support for up to 198,000 data points and 20 named recording blocks. This can then be viewed on the device in either text or graph format. Alternatively, it can be downloaded via a USB port on a Windows PC. This alone offers instantaneous access to vital data on how water or gas is flowing through a piping system, something which is vital within the construction sector.

Whoever the supplier, portable flow meters offer an array of benefits. The first benefit is, of course, the ability to move from one piping network to another with little time needed for removing and applying the hardware. This in itself proves more efficient for the construction worker but also more cost effective, as the firm does not have to invest in multiple meters for various areas of the piping network on a single site.

Portable flow meters also allow construction firms to absorb the cost themselves, rather than offsetting it to the client in question. Whilst the cost of a £1,500+ piece of hardware would not be an issue on large construction projects, it would on medium sized projects in which multiple would be needed. Now the construction firm can invest in a handful of flow meters to be used on multiple projects and, dependent upon the flow meter purchased, in multiple scenarios.

For any construction firm yet to consider or invest in portable flow meters, carrying out research is advised. You may not only find that efficiency can be improved but that consistency of work can be too, especially if no flow meter technology is being utilised at the moment. There is, of course, also the option to hire a piece of hardware beforehand.
