Stone Retaining Walls – How to Clean Them

Some people don’t realize what a ‘prize’ an old stone wall is on their property. This piece of history should be maintained or ‘righted’ instead of falling into disrepair! A thorough cleaning of an old stone wall can bring it back to life and once again add beauty to your yard and landscape.

You must clean! – Old stone walls build up grime and mold over the years. These stains can be difficult to remove depending on how deep the mold and mildew have gone. Fungus and algae growth can also occur, as well as vines or ground covers rooting into walls. So what to do? Well you know these parasites have to go! So let’s get out the pressure washer and get ready to clean!

Use a medium sized pressure washer – Is the pressure washer ready? OK… NOW… WAIT!! The worst thing you can do at this point is start the pressure washer and blast all the joints with the high pressure spray!

Additionally if you start cleaning the wall without soaking it properly, you will only push the surface grime deeper into the pores of the walls. No… the approach I’m about to explain to you is a little more subtle and soft.

ok Now start the cleaning process by saturating the wall first. This is achieved by washing down the wall with a wide angle nozzle. Stand back maybe 3′ – 4′ from the wall and let the water flow along, around and down the wall.

Now your wall is thoroughly soaked allowing the detergent to penetrate deep into the wall system and remove grime and grime. Also the saturated wall will prevent the detergent from drying out prematurely and give it enough time to do its job.

The trick is to use a commercial grade degreaser – Buy a concentrated heavy degreaser from a professional pressure cleaning supply company now. Do not dilute. Pour the detergent straight from the bucket into the garden sprayer and start spraying the wall. Make sure every inch of the wall is covered and try to keep a ‘wet look’ as you go. This degreaser will cost a few dollars but this is no place to scrimp. If you want to clean a wall, buy a degreaser… simple.

Now it looks even worse! – OK, now that the wall is wet and the degreaser is applied, what do you do? you wait That’s right… you wait.

After about 10 – 15 minutes the wall will start turning dark amber and dirty brown. You will see streaks of soot dripping down the face of the wall. The wall will look terrible and you will worry that you will damage it! cool As soon as you feel like it’s a hopeless cause and are ready to throw in the towel, you’ll know you’re almost done!

Now that the degreaser has had a chance to get to work picking up grime, it’s time to agitate it, just like the washing machine. Use your 15 degree nozzle to hit the wall with quick, random strokes and from top to bottom. You do not intend to saturate the wall at this time. As soon as the spray pressure shows soap flakes, go up and down the wall and along its length.

You can do this twice along the length of the wall to get the deepest clean possible. This agitation will cause the degreaser to become less viscous and create soapy bubbles that will remove dirt and grime from the surface.

Ok… now you can blow it up! – After the degreaser is agitated you can now proceed to the final step of pressure washing the wall. Place your wand 12″ – 16″ away from the wall face from where you first applied the degreaser.

You clean by moving your nozzle from joint to joint and from stone to stone, picking up grime from the wall. As you go down the wall you will see grime and grime come off. If a section next seems to be drying too quickly, agitate again, keeping it wet until you can reach that section.

You’ll be amazed at how quickly years of grime, grime, mold and debris wash away. Stubborn stained areas may require another application.

You’ll be amazed when you’re done! That old gray wall will look new and fresh and you will be done. After all that hard work sit back and enjoy the beauty your restored wall provides… you finally deserve to relax!
